To rent or not to rent?
So you’re about to
set off
for Italy. You have your itinerary
mapped out
and you have booked the hotels you will be staying in.
The only thing left to decide is whether to rent a car or use the trains and public transport to move around once you get there.
Renting a car has advantages and disadvantages.
One advantage is that you have more freedom. There are no strict timetables to follow. You can travel at your own pace,
literally stopping to smell the flowers in the valleys you happen to
come across
accidentally.
Another advantage of hiring a car is that if the car
broke down
, the car rental company would immediately
hand
over
a new vehicle for you. You would not have to worry about repairs and find yourself without any form of assistance.
When you rent a car, you can also get more options and you are able to choose which car should be more suitable for your trip.
There are some disadvantages of renting a car, though.
First, many tourists make the mistake of planning car itineraries in Italy’s big cities and
end up
having to
cope with
nerve-wrecking traffic, unfamiliar regulations, all while trying to catch a glimpse of the sights through a sea of cars,
motor scooters and buses.
Second, there are the rising rental rates. Although there is a wide choice of rental companies, hiring a car might be
more expensive than using the train or bus.
In addition, there is the difficulty to familiarise yourself with the car controls and surely you can’t be bothered to find
the controls of the water heater while driving in the middle of a busy road.
Finally, although most companies now allow online reservations, you may find it easier and less tedious to buy a train
pass or bus tickets.
In conclusion, weigh the pros and cons carefully. Maybe it would be wise to rent a car between major cities or for the
leg of your trip, but use public transport in city centres.
