Vehicle Rental
Vehicle rental has become an increasingly important part of the global travel and transportation industry.
The European industry is characterised by a small number of major multinational car rental companies including
Avis Europe, Hertz and Europcar, large
national vehicle rental companies and
numerous small companies primarily
servicing their own local markets. This
fragmentation of the car rental industry
makes the measurement of the market
data very difficult.
Euromonitor International estimates
that the three multinational companies
account for 61% of the overall market.
The research shows that the Europcar
Group (including the National and Alamo
brands) holds the leading position in the
European marketplace with an estimated
share of 26.7%. Avis and Budget brands have the second highest aggregate market revenue share in Europe
(18.3%). Hertz is the third largest operator with an estimated market share of 16.1%.
Over 85% of Avis Europe’s revenues

in 2010 were generated in the five major markets of France,
Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
