Sketching and drawing
S
ketches and drawings provide visual representation
of a design. They do different jobs. The aim of
sketching is to communicate an idea. Indeed, most
designs start as sketches. The aim of a drawing is to
communicate detailed information about a design, such
as dimensions, what parts to use and how the parts
should be put together.
Drawings are one of the main methods used by
designers and engineers to communicate information
about products. There are a wide variety of different
types of drawing used in engineering. Most drawings
have to conform to certain rules, known as standards
or conventions, so that all engineers can understand
them.
Modelling
, creating a 3-D representation of an object
or product, is used by most designers to help them
develop and test their ideas. A model can be virtual,
existing only on a computer, or physical, when the item
is really made. Virtual modelling is carried out using CAD
1
software. The final stage of physical modelling comes
when the product
prototype
is made.

:
acronym for computer-aided design. A CAD system is a combination of hardware and software
that enables engineers and architects to design everything from furniture to airplanes
