Development in woodworking
Until recently, buying a drill press for woodworking involved making a compromise because most machines
are designed to meet the needs of metal shops. Now, designers at Ryobi have come to the rescue with
model WDP 1850. First its features: it is powered by a 6-amp induction motor that spins a chuck at variable
speeds of anything between 500 and 3000 rpm. The head assembly is raised and lowered by a crank and it
rotates 360° around the column for oversize work.
The machine features two independent depth-stop
mechanisms: a threaded depth-stop rod and a quil
l
stop
which has a graduated scale for accurate positioning.
Other features include a quill lock, a well-placed work light
and a built-in clamp to grip the work piece. But Ryobi’s
real contribution is in the worktable, that rotates 360°, tilts
up to 45° and that can be removed for special operations.
