Smart Steps B2: a coursebook introducing the ‘Reverse Engineering’ approach to support exam success

What if exam preparation at B2 level was not about doing more practice tasks, but about understanding tasks better? Smart Steps B2 is a new exam-based coursebook for Upper Secondary students. The course combines full B2 grammar and vocabulary development with a clear focus on task types commonly found across B2 exams (e.g., multiple choice, gap fill, matching and short answers, etc.) for all four core skills: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
Instead of preparing students separately for Cambridge B2 First for Schools, INVALSI English Language Test, IELTS Academic and the Esame di Maturità, Smart Steps B2 shows how the same task types work across exams, what they are really testing, and how they vary.
This online webinar introduces teachers to an entirely new and highly engaging three-step approach (THINK, TRAIN and CREATE) to exam task preparation called ‘Reverse Engineering’, which lies at the core of the Smart Steps B2 methodology.

• In THINK, students identify exactly what the task is testing and what kind of answer it requires.
• In TRAIN, they practise using short extracts from a task with guided focus on the various grammar, vocabulary and language features it targets.
• In CREATE, students step into the role of the exam writer to construct questions, answers and distractors, learning how tasks are built and why some answers work and others do not.

As a result, students know what each task is asking, what to focus on, and what they need to do in order to succeed.
