Hamlet as a social misfit
Hamlet’s indecisions in his most famous monologue, “To be, or not to be”, are not just typical of his melancholic temperament, or due to his undoubtedly difficult predicament (to kill or not to kill a man who is both his king and his mother’s husband). They are the expression of a young man’ dissatisfaction with himself and the role he is called upon to play in the world. Hamlet is a social misfit already at the beginning of the play, before he even knows that his father has been murdered. He has problems with his mother, his step- father, his university friends, the girl he seems to be in love with, Ophelia. He suffers from an identity crisis so acute that he comes to despise himself as a coward and a good-for-nothing. Shakespeare was no psychologist or pedagogist, but it is another sign of his being our contemporary that in Prince Hamlet he gives us a topical portrait of a young man who cannot find his place in the world.
