How to Work Safely
12
Read the passage and answer the following questions.
a
In your own words, explain why risk assessment is essential.
b
Who should test portable appliances in a lab?
13
Use the information from this lesson to answer the following questions.
a
A qualified technician opens up a mains power supply to
investigate a fault. What safety precaution(s) should he take
before removing the case and touching any component?
b
The mains cable going into the metal case of a vacuum
cleaner is damaged, explain why the vacuum cleaner should
not be used.
c
Would you expect the vacuum cleaner to have a two-core or
three-core cable? Why?
Risk assessment
R
isk assessment
is essential if you are to
work safely in your lab. It involves identifying
dangers associated with carrying out an activity, and
then taking appropriate action to reduce risk. As part
of your risk assessment you should consider dangers
both from the low voltage circuits that you are building
and high voltage mains circuit that may be used to
bring power to circuits in commercial applications. A
qualified engineer should test the power supplies to all
mains-operated portable appliances.
Industry and education must take care of employees
and students respectively, and ensure that the
environment in which they work (including the
equipment they use) is safe. Part of that safety check
is to make sure that all portable appliances have been
electrically tested. However, you should be aware of
1
safety features and always carry out a visual check of
the
casing
, wire and plugs and report anything you
notice.
