Classwork
Now compare your ideas with those of your classmates. Then write a list on the
blackboard with the essential points (key-words/ideas) on which you all agree.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY RULES
General electrical safety rules must be carefully
observed to avoid hazards, such as:
- ensure that properly wired
plugs
are used
- avoid loose wires or connections that can arc
- fuses of the right rating must be fitted as a
safeguard
- external parts must be
earthed
so that if a fault
develops, the fuse will blow and cut off the
supply
1
- never run power tools from
lamp sockets
- use the correct cable to connect plugs and
equipment
- replace old or damaged cables
- disconnect any equipment before making any
adjustment
Electrical precautions must be taken to prevent
electrical hazards as stated by the Safety Rules issued
by the companies and by the safety laws, like the
Health and Safety at Work Act, which was made law
in Great Britain in 1974 or the “Legge 626” in Italy.

a fuse does not prevent the user from getting an electric
shock. The fuse will blow when the current in the circuit
exceeds the value of the fuse.Aperson touching a live circuit
will not create sufficient current to blow a fuse. This is why
modern circuits have Residual Current Devices (RCDs)
which disconnect the circuit under such circumstances
5
Check whether these rules and laws are observed in your school laboratory or whether there are
other specific safety rules.
6
Translate the main safety or warning signs displayed in your laboratory into English.
