Go back to Texts 1-5 and read through the Technical English boxes, use them in order to create a
glossary with the technical words (and their translation) that you have encountered in this first
Unit
.
Follow this guidance:
a
list and translate the words starting with
elec-
b
list and translate the words which indicate

c
list and translate the words related to
current
.
When you read a technical text you will use different strategies depending on the reason you are reading
the text. For example, you may read because you want to:
·
find information on specific topics
·
understand the global meaning of the text
·
identify key-words
·
locate main ideas
·
look for details
·
analyse the text.
Using the appropriate technique helps you read more effectively. Here is a list of reading strategies.

Reading strategies
Reading techniques
When can you use them?
What do they mean?
1 scanning
2 skimming
when you have to search for specific
information, e.g. in a leaflet,
a data-book, a contents list,
a timetable, chart, glossary,
or a report and so on
when you have to understand
the global meaning of the text
or of a paragraph
when
scanning
you do not need to read the entire text,
just only to look at pictures, illustrations, diagrams,
highlighted words or those in italics or bold,
at headings, charts, etc. It should not take you more
than few minutes
skimming
means reading in order to get a global,
general, understanding of a topic without
stopping at every new, unknown word,
but getting as much as you can by inferring
meanings from the context
3 search-reading
4 key-word searching
5 reading in detail
when you have to understand
the global meaning of the text
or of a paragraph
search-reading
means reading to find
information on a particular topic.
It is similar to scanning, but is used in paragraphs,
long texts, etc
to look for key-words
and the main ideas
key-words
are words or expressions which are
essential in order to understand the main ideas
in a text and then summarise it
when you have to get
a complete understanding
of the text
to
read in detail
start with the previously explained
techniques.
First
: skim the text and try to understand as much
as you can without having to look up every
word in the dictionary.
Second
: underline key-words.
Third
: if the text is long, divide it in paragraphs
and then find key-words in each paragraph.
Fourth
: read the text again looking at words you don’t
know especially if they occur often, just
in case they are key words look them up in the
dictionary, or guess their meanings (then check)
