Who are the real Brits?
Hello, I’m
Sophie.
Hey, I’m Ken.
My name’s
Kemal.
When you think of the British do
you think of trendy pop groups
like Coldplay? Football hooligans?
Queen Elizabeth? Mr
Bean? We’ve all got
different ideas and
stereotypes about
the British but,
who are the real
Brits?
The truth is that
the British are
all of these
people!
The United
Kingdom
today
comprises people from different
cultures and racial origins. The
nation is really four countries:
England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland, but a large
percentage of the population are
also descendants of immigrants
from the ex-British colonies (the
West Indies, India and Pakistan)
or families of refugees
looking for a different life
safe from the poverty,
war or persecution
in their own
countries.
Many
immigrant
families
speak the
language of
their country
of origin, wear their traditional
clothes and eat their traditional
food. This gives a multi-cultural
flavour to some areas of British
towns – there are ethnic food
shops, restaurants, and mosques
next to traditional British fish and
chip shops and the local pub!
Who are the British?
There are many different
stereotypes of the British.
Britain has got a population of
59,834, 300 people. 8% of
the population today come from
other ethnic groups.
