In 1994, Erin Gruwell began teaching in a high school in Long Beach,
California. She was a new teacher and teaching in Long Beach was
not easy for Erin. That’s because life was not easy for her 14-year-old
students. These students lived in a very poor area of Long Beach. The
students all hated school; they all hated the teacher; and they all
hated each other.
But Erin introduced her students to books written by teenagers –
books like
The Diary of Anne Frank
. The students learnt to have more
respect for each other. They called themselves the ‘Freedom Writers’
and started to write an anonymous diary. In the diary they talked
about their difficult experiences in life. Writing about all the bad
things in their lives helped them. They learned to accept the past and go forward. They learnt not to
let other people limit their dreams.
The students’ dreams came true when the diary became a real book,
The Freedom Writers Diary
, and the book
became famous. Erin and her students appeared on TV, in newspapers and magazines. In 2006, they made a
Hollywood film of their story with young actors playing the parts of the students. In real life, many of the
students went to university. Some of them are now teachers and they want to help new students to follow
their own dreams.
