“Hello, everybody! Welcome to Edinburgh! My name is Alasdair McMurdo, and I’m a
Blue Badge Tour Guide. I’m pleased to
.....................................
you on this fascinating full
day tour of Edinburgh that
..................................
some of the city’s most famous landmarks.
I’ll take you on a guided tour of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official residence
of the Queen of Scotland. The palace was home to Mary Queen of Scots for six
years and

beautiful tapestries and paintings. You may also like to visit
the new Queen’s Gallery which

a programme of changing exhibitions
from The Royal Collection. We will then visit Edinburgh Castle, part of which
...........................
to the 12th century. The castle
is Edinburgh’s best known and most popular attraction, and one of the most visited ancient monuments in the UK. It has
breathtaking views of Edinburgh and tons to interest young and old alike. It
...........................
the Crown Jewels of Scotland
and the famous Stone of Destiny. It was upon this stone that the old Kings of the Scots were crowned. The Stone was
stolen by the English king Edward I in 1296, put underneath the Coronation Throne in Westminster Abbey where the
kings are still crowned today and eventually given back to Scotland in 1996. It contains a statue of Braveheart, too! The
Esplanade is also the venue of the world-renowned Edinburgh Military Tattoo, with its music, marching and historical re-
enactments. The castle is home to Scotland’s most famous cannon – a 15th century monstrosity called Mons Meg, which is
fired every day (except Sunday) at precisely 1 pm – be careful, it’s deafening! In a more sombre corner of the castle is the
Witches’ Well where over 300 women were burned between 1492-1722. Prepare to be enlightened by the past!
We will then
...........................
through the Old Town using the Royal Mile, which connects the Castle and the Palace, and
...........................
around the 18th Century Georgian New Town. We’ll
...........................
the fine church of St Giles, the “High Kirk”
with its beautiful stained glass windows. We will also
...........................
a visit to the Georgian House and see life in 1796! Going
back even further in time to 1424, you may
...........................
a visit to Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots in
1542 and home to all the Stuart Kings.
You may also like to
...........................
the Royal Yacht Britannia. This is the ship where presidents, kings and queens were
entertained and it was, first and foremost, the home of the Royal family. Now the ship is berthed in Edinburgh’s Port of
Leith, and a visit to it gives a fascinating insight into the life of probably the world’s most famous family! We’ll walk past the
Scottish Parliament, a unique modern building located at the foot of The Royal Mile in the Old Town, opposite The Palace of
Holyroodhouse.
You’ll have a chance to shop too! You might want to
...........................
through the cobbled city centre streets or
...........................
along Princes Street checking out the tartan, whisky or shortbreads that have made Scotland famous! I suggest you go into
James Pringle Weavers where you can purchase quality tartan clothing/highland dress, gifts and souvenirs. You may visit
Kinloch Anderson, renowned experts in Highland Dress since 1868. They specialise in quality Scottish clothing - tartan by
the metre, tweed skirts, knitwear, scarves, rugs and even jewellery.
