Scotland offers a fantastic range
of things to do and see.
Are you interested in history or folklore? Are you a night
bird?
Exciting concerts, festivals and pulsating night life are
waiting for you. Scotland has a year-round programme of
festivals and events and there are 12 international festivals in
Edinburgh alone. Besides the biggest and best-known Edinburgh
International Festival which takes place in the city in August,
there is the vast Fringe Festival, the Science Festival and the
famous Edinburgh Tattoo.
Aberdeen, Glasgow, Lewis and other towns have their own
festivals, too. And there are the traditional Highland Games
which take place all over the country and the islands during the
summer months: burly men

are still a
sight to be seen!
Are you energetic and love outdoor activities?
We have exceptional leisure facilities, for example we have
some of the world’s greatest golf courses, mountain walks and
watersports centres. Sailing, windsurfing and canoeing are very
popular here, and so are hang gliding and kite flying. Horse
riding is part of the culture of the Borders. Winter sports include
skiing, snowboarding, and curling.
If you simply want to relax, you can enjoy countless castles,
historic houses, museums, monuments, or why not?
Go on a relaxing trip along the Caledonian or Forth & Clyde Canals.

A TASTE OF
SCOTLAND
W
elcome to Scotland! Welcome to
this land of great beauty and mys-
tery, where mist-laden air glides
along glens

and across lochs!

This is a small country in the northernmost
part of Britain of around 79.000 square
kilometres, with a population of just over 5
million Scots. It is part of the United King-
dom, but it has its own devolved parliament
based in Edinburgh, its own legal and judicial
system, its currency and, above all, it has its
own distinct culture.
Scotland is divided into ten regions, each
with its own distinctive geography, breath-
taking scenery and places of interest: among
them the Highlands and the islands in the
north, the more populated Lowlands in the
middle, the Southern Uplands and the Bor-
ders in the south of the country.
Scotland boasts international airports in its
biggest cities, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aber-
deen, as well as several regional airports. It is
also provided with efficient rail services and
road links across the country.
