Food & Drink
Away from the tourist hot spots, you can find enjoyable,
authentic restaurants serving honest food. Avoid places
with no pricelists, or “menu turistico”: almost always
these serve second-rate food at first-rate prices.
Follow the Venetians, and head to the quieter side
streets around Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Polo and
Castello. There, without too much trouble, you’ll find
a ristorante (a top quality establishment serving a full
range of meat and pasta dishes), a trattoria (a cheaper,
more familiar, friendly option), and osteria (usually a
bar with a limited, but good, range of daily specials
and snacks), or a pizzeria. Well, we’re assuming you
know what pizzerias are.
Venetian specialities
In Venice you will find a lot of seafood and lagoon fish on offer.
Polenta
is a regional speciality, often served with fish or meat,
but sometimes with mushrooms or cheese. Good Venetian dishes
include
antipasti
like fish salad,
sarde in saor
(marinated sweet and
sour sardines), mussels called
peoci
; first courses like
granseola
(spider crab risotto), soups and soufflés; second courses like
seppie
in nero
(cuttlefish in its ink),
fritto misto
(mixed fried fish from the
Venetian Lagoon), the famous
fegato alla veneziana
(calf’s liver
served on a bed of onions),
castraure
(baby artichokes),
carpaccio
(raw beef, which was created here by Giuseppe Cipriani at Venice’s
Harry Bar). Seasonal specialities include peas and radicchio from
Treviso. Finally, why not have a delicious
tiramisù
which is said to
originate from Venice, a sorbet,
panna cotta
or local dry biscuits
from Burano?

Work in pairs
Act out the conversation between a hotel receptionist and a
tourist who would like to try some typical Venetian food.
