1 RIALTO
The first harbour of Venice. Goods unloaded on
the banks of the Grand Canal and kept in warehouses called
“fondaci” were carried here during the day and sold on the
stalls. The Rialto Bridge, built in stone, dates back to the
second half of the 16th century, while the previous ones were
made of wood.
2 MERCERIE
The most fashionable street in Venice called
“Mercerie”, one of the most typical and animated thoroughfares,
full of elegant shops.
3 SAINT MARK’S SQUARE
Considered the most magnificent
square in the world. Closed northwards by the Old Procuratie
and the Clock Tower with two brawny Moors striking the hour
all the year round, southwards by the New Procuratie, westwards
by Saint Mark’s Basilica. Under the arcades of the Procuratie are the famous cafés of the
18th century, such as Florian, Quadri and Lavena. The highest bell-tower in Venice (96.80m)
stands here.
