Classwork
Play a team game which will help you practise saying numbers and converting
measurements. In teams, prepare your questions. Ask each other your maths questions and see which
team is quickest at getting the right answers (you must decide beforehand whether calculators are
allowed or not!). Ask each other questions such as:
He drank four litres of water, how many pints is
that? The boxer weighed in at 15 stone, what’s that in kilos? I’ve put 3 gallons of petrol in my car, what’s
that in litres?
Prepare 10 questions per group/team.
WORKING ON SKILLS
Describing a diagram or the position of something
Look at this grid which shows different ways of saying where something is and use it for reference for the
next exercises.

The British ton is the long ton, which is 2,240 pounds.
**
The U.S. ton is the short ton which is 2,000 pounds. Both tons are actually defined in the same way. 1 ton = 20
cwt. It is just the definition of the hundredweight that differs between countries. In the U.S. 1 cwt = 100 punds; In
the UK 1 cwt = 112 pounds.
