After reading, look at the drawing below and describe it.
8
Using the Internet, find examples of orthographic drawings.

Brainstorming
Have you ever used CAD at
school?
Look at this picture and decide whether,
and in what ways, it is different from a hand
drawn image.
If you have already used CAD, discuss, with
your teacher and classmates the advantages
and disadvantages of using CAD instead of
hand drawings: list the advantages and the
disadvantages you have found.
10
Read the text and complete a chart with the advantages and the disadvantages of using CAD that
the text mentions. Then compare the chart with the lists you made after the debate. Are there any
similarities? Or differences?

Using CAD for drawing
C
omputer Aided Design
(CAD) is
software packages developed to
assist in product design. When most
people talk about CAD they are thinking
of high quality drawings. However, CAD
includes software for modelling and
designing electrical,
pneumatic and
mechanical systems
too. Indeed, CAD has
now largely replaced
1
manual drawing
for creating
working drawings
. It is
used all over the world, to develop
products ranging
2
from simple
nuts
and
bolts
to televisions, cars and houses.
There are two main types of CAD drawing
software: for two dimensional and for
three dimensional drawings. Using a
2-D CAD is very like drawing by hand.
The screen has a working area that
functions exactly like the piece of
paper you used to draw on.
But 3-D CAD is far more complicated to
use as you have to work in an empty,
three-dimensional space.
CAD software is widely used today
because it offers many advantages
over traditional hand drawing methods.
