Stages in the development
of a new product
Stage
1
1 - design
Initially the customer’s requirements are studied by a
designer
or a
design team
, in order to produce a series
of specifications which take into consideration all the
different factors that influence product design.
When the final design has been produced, in the
form of a lay-out design, it is then passed on to the
draughtsmen/women
who prepare both a general
assembly drawing and the drawings for individual parts.
After the drawings have been checked, traced
and printed, copies are sent to the manufacturing
departmentwhere theproductwill bemade, assembled
and tested. The manufacturing stage does not signal
the end of the designers’ responsibilities, which
continue throughout the manufacturing process,
prototype
trials
and customer trials as designs must
be adapted whenever changes have to be made.
Stage 2 – production
The manufacturing process takes place in the
machine shop
. Entering a machine shop, means
entering a world where well-prepared people work,
using special tools, both bench and machine tools,
and performing operations that require specific skills
and training.
These
craftsmen/women
have to know about
materials, tools, drawings, machine operations,
computers and the basic rules of
safety
and
electricity.
Theyhave tobeable to readand interpret thedrawings
prepared by the design team, and follow instructions
for tooling up
